FILM FESTIVAL GET-AWAY: CINÉFEST SUDBURY TOUR
by Liz MayerJeff Barlow, of Napanee, loves movies. In fact, he's such a confirmed cinephile that he is the founder and coordinator of the Great Napanee Film Society (an alternative film series much like the QFA).
It just so happens that Jeff is also a travel consultant and tour organizer, affiliated with Bayridge Travel in Napanee. Now Jeff -- with the able assistance of our own QFA organizer, Denise Wakeman -- has combined his personal interest with his professional skills to offer a unique four day escorted tour to the Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival, September 21-24, 2000.
With round-trip transportation by private coach, three nights' accommodation, tickets for a Gala showing and ten (10!) additional films, plus breakfast and gratuities, all for $329 per person, Jeff's Sudbury film festival odyssey offers fellow movie fans a lot of value.
It also promises to deliver a whole lot of fun: an evening and two full days to take in the best new Canadian and international films, socialize with fellow movie-lovers and meet special industry guests, all sandwiched between two convivial, sit-back-and-relax rides through the fall landscapes of central and northern Ontario.
The annual Sudbury festival, billed as "the North's window to cutting edge film culture," was first presented in 1989. Last year's edition drew 20,000 movie-goers to brand new Canadian and international films such as Felicia's Journey, The Winslow Boy and An Ideal Husband. Following on the heels of its high-gloss, big-city cousin, the Toronto International Film Festival, Sudbury Cinéfest offers many of the same great films in a less frenzied and more accessible format.
Several QFA committee members are already Sudbury festival converts, having attended the event during the past three years. As a programming resource, their previewing has paid off: film selections from the Sudbury line-up have been prominently featured in our programs over the past few seasons.
